The precise combination of 'triggers' that tell Mediterranean tortoises it is time to dig down for brumation (hibernation) over winter are far from obvious. It is not quite as simple as temperature, as we discover here. It is far more subtle, and far more complex than that, and there is still much that we do not fully understand. Even on very warm, bright days with plenty of available vegetation they decide it is time to dig down, not appearing fully again for several months.
